What It Actually Means to Be an SVA-Approved Virtual Assistant

So… I’m officially an SVA-approved Virtual Assistant.
Cue the tiny confetti cannon.

But what does that actually mean for you, the business owner who’s already juggling five tabs, three deadlines, and a questionable snack?

Let’s break it down.

First things first: What is the SVA?

The Society of Virtual Assistants (SVA) is a UK-based organisation that sets professional standards for virtual assistants. Basically, it’s like the Sorting Hat for the VA world — only with fewer talking hats and more data protection policies.

If a VA is approved by the SVA, it means they’ve ticked all the right boxes to prove they’re:

  • Legit
  • Professional
  • Compliant
  • Not going to ghost you mid-project

Still wondering why that matters? Stay with me…

What It Takes to Get Approved

To become SVA-approved, you can’t just show up with a Canva logo and a dream. There’s a list. And yes, I checked it twice.

Here’s what’s involved:

✅ Proven Experience

You need at least one year of experience, or a few months as an active SVA community member. Basically: no dabblers. No “just starting out” vibes.

✅ Legally Compliant Contracts

You must use proper contracts drafted by a UK solicitor. None of that copy-paste-from-the-internet nonsense. Everyone knows where they stand, and it protects both sides.

✅ Data Protection & GDPR Compliance

SVA-approved VAs are registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). That means we’re trained and legally required to handle your data properly. You won’t find your client list floating around in the cloud, I promise.

✅ Professional Indemnity Insurance

Just in case. It’s a safety net, for you and for me.

✅ Secure Data Backups

Because tech fails. Files get lost. Laptops fall in sinks. (Don’t ask.) Approved VAs have off-site backups to keep your stuff safe.

✅ A Proper Website

SVA doesn’t approve VAs with vague Instagram bios and no real presence. You need:

  • A secure HTTPS website
  • Acceptable Use Policy
  • Privacy & Cookie Policies
  • Terms & Conditions

Basically, you need to look and act like a proper business. Because you are one.

Why It Actually Matters to You

When you hire an SVA-approved VA, you’re not just hiring someone who can colour-code a spreadsheet.

You’re getting someone who…

  • Takes your data and business seriously
  • Has clear legal boundaries and protection
  • Understands what it means to run a business, not just support one
  • Isn’t going to disappear when things get busy

You’re delegating to someone you can trust. And trust is everything when you’re running a business on limited time and even less brain space.

TL;DR: You’re In Safe Hands

Hiring a VA is a big move. You’re handing over your logins, your clients, your calendar. It can feel… vulnerable.

So it helps to know you’re working with someone who’s been independently vetted. Who’s proven they’re serious about doing things properly.

Which brings me back to me.

Yep, I’m officially SVA-approved. And I’d love to help you untangle the chaos.
